Allergy Matters PDF
By:Luud J.E.J. Gilissen,Luud J. W. J. Gilissen,Harry J. Wichers,Huub F.J. Savelkoul,Robert J. Bogers
Published on 2006-01-30 by Springer Science & Business Media

In Western societies, the incidence and prevalence of respiratory and food-related allergies have increased rapidly over the past decades. Changes in life style, e.g. in hygiene, child vaccination, housing insulation, food consumption patterns, etc. are thought to be involved in this increase. Direct and indirect costs related to allergy are expected to rise rapidly, especially in the Central and Eastern European countries that recently joined the European Union. Major concerns relate to the significant decrease of the quality of life of patients and their relatives. Therefore, time is urgent to develop strategies for large-scale and structural tackling of the allergy problem. Approaches aiming at allergy prevention with a focus on controlling our living environment and the food production chain, as well as on the choices consumers and patients make, seem very promising and complementary to solve this medicalized problem. This book, written by renowned experts, reflects the current ideas for future possibilities of allergy prevention, using integrated and multidisciplinary strategies and covering the entire knowledge framework from comprehensive fundamental research to implementation into society. It describes approaches from the following main topics: The medical and molecular context The food production chain and novel foods The living and occupational environment People and society. This book will be an indispensable tool for all those scientists that are searching for ways to solve the current allergy problems.

Innovation in Healthy and Functional Foods PDF
By:Dilip Ghosh,Shantanu Das,Debasis Bagchi,R.B. Smarta
Published on 2016-04-19 by CRC Press

The focus of food science and technology has shifted from previous goals of improving food safety and enhancing food taste toward providing healthy and functional foods. Today’s consumers desire foods that go beyond basic nutrition—foods capable of promoting better health, or even playing a disease-prevention role. To meet this need for innovation, academic research must be combined with the development and commercialization strategies of industry. Innovation in Healthy and Functional Foods brings together this knowledge, with contributions from experts in biological science, food science, engineering, marketing, regulation, law, finance, sustainability, and management. Focusing on functional foods that have components added—such as omega-3, probiotics, and protein—to provide health benefits, this book presents various aspects of the innovation process. These include consumer insights, trends in developed and developing markets, and technological advances in functional foods and ingredients. It also addresses the key drivers of food industry innovation—affordability, sustainability, and tightening government regulations. Chapters cover characteristics of various markets around the world; consumer perception; food processing, packaging, and ingredients; innovation in functional ingredients; and functional ingredient delivery. Given the importance and challenges of getting functional food products into the marketplace, this book also covers the business aspects of innovation in food science, including marketing, financial implications, and commercial feasibility. Additionally, contributors provide insights into future trends, such as food tourism, nanotechnology, sustainability, and globalization. Bringing together expertise from academia and industry, this text provides an overview of contemporary food science, with wisdom and know-how in both innovation and commercialization, placing functional foods in a broader context for readers.

International Health Statecraft PDF - How To Download

International Health Statecraft PDF
By:Ulysses B. Panisset
Published on 2000 by University Press of America

In International Health Statecraft, Ulysses B. Panisset addresses the question of whether international health phenomena, such as the 1991 cholera epidemic in Peru, influence the international relations of the affected country. The speed and volume at which people, commodities and microorganisms are currently crossing borders has increased significantly over the past decades, and as a result has changed the scope of international health. Panisset proposes a novel analytic model to help develop global cooperation and far-reaching policies that anticipate and respond to pandemics, regional environmental toxicology disasters, and other health phenomena. Organized into five cohesive chapters, International Health Statecraft will be of interest to foreign policy and public health decision-makers, analysts, students, and scholars.

Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies PDF
By:Committee on Obesity Prevention Policies for Young Children,Institute of Medicine
Published on 2011-10-31 by National Academies Press

Childhood obesity is a serious health problem that has adverse and long-lasting consequences for individuals, families, and communities. The magnitude of the problem has increased dramatically during the last three decades and, despite some indications of a plateau in this growth, the numbers remain stubbornly high. Efforts to prevent childhood obesity to date have focused largely on school-aged children, with relatively little attention to children under age 5. However, there is a growing awareness that efforts to prevent childhood obesity must begin before children ever enter the school system. Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies reviews factors related to overweight and obese children from birth to age 5, with a focus on nutrition, physical activity, and sedentary behavior, and recommends policies that can alter children's environments to promote the maintenance of healthy weight. Because the first years of life are important to health and well-being throughout the life span, preventing obesity in infants and young children can contribute to reversing the epidemic of obesity in children and adults. The book recommends that health care providers make parents aware of their child's excess weight early. It also suggests that parents and child care providers keep children active throughout the day, provide them with healthy diets, limit screen time, and ensure children get adequate sleep. In addition to providing comprehensive solutions to tackle the problem of obesity in infants and young children, Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies identifies potential actions that could be taken to implement those recommendations. The recommendations can inform the decisions of state and local child care regulators, child care providers, health care providers, directors of federal and local child care and nutrition programs, and government officials at all levels.

Advancing the Human Right to Health PDF - How To Download

Advancing the Human Right to Health PDF
By:José M. Zuniga,Stephen P. Marks,Lawrence O. Gostin
Published on 2013-07-04 by OUP Oxford

Advancing the Human Right to Health offers a prospective on the global response to one of the greatest moral, legal, and public health challenges of the 21st century - achieving the human right to health as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and other legal instruments. Featuring writings by global thought-leaders in the world of health human rights, the book brings clarity to many of the complex clinical, ethical, economic, legal, and socio-cultural questions raised by injury, disease, and deeper determinants of health, such as poverty. Much more than a primer on the right to health, this book features an examination of profound inequalities in health, which have resulted in millions of people condemned to unnecessary suffering and hastened deaths. In so doing, it provides a thoughtful account of the right to health's parameters, strategies on ways in which to achieve it, and discussion of why it is so essential in a 21st century context. Country-specific case studies provide context for analysing the right to health and assessing whether, and to what extent, this right has influenced critical decision-making that makes a difference in people's lives. Thematic chapters also look at the specific challenges involved in translating the right to health into action. Advancing the Human Right to Health highlights the urgency to build upon the progress made in securing the right to health for all, offering a timely reminder that all stakeholders must redouble their efforts to advance the human right to health.

Orphan Drugs PDF - How To Download

Orphan Drugs PDF
By:Elizabeth Hernberg-Ståhl,Miroslav Reljanović
Published on 2013-11-15 by Elsevier

This authoritative and comprehensive book makes the reader familiar with the processes of bringing orphan drugs to the global market. There are between 5,000 and 7,000 rare diseases and the number of patients suffering from them is estimated to be more than 50 million in the US and Europe. Before the orphan drug legislation enacted in the US in 1983, there was a limited interest from industry to develop treatment for very small patient groups. One of the difficulties is, of course, that similar levels of investment are needed from a pharmaceutical company to bring a drug to the market for both small and large patient groups. The journey from application of an orphan drug designation to a reimbursed market- approved drug is long and many obstacles occur during the journey. After reading the book, readers will: Understand who the players/stakeholders are in the rare orphan disease field and their specific needs and concerns: patients and patient organizations, researchers and treating physicians within the field, industry, regulatory and reimbursement bodies* Understand the strong partnership between the different players and the various initiatives to improve and increase access to treatment for patients; minimizing the gap between numbers of known diseases, orphan designations, approved drugs and paid drugs. The book also provides short practical case stories from patients and researchers, as well as representatives from industry and authorities on the challenges they came across in developing orphan drugs or getting access to orphan drugs. A comprehensive overview of strategy, key activities and considerations of how to bring an orphan drug from concept to the market and make it available to patients A source of updated information, news and trends for those who are already active in this fast-evolving field Covers the global definitions and the criteria for getting an orphan drug designation in, for example, the US and Europe
